Who is Johnny Red Coat?
It’s not a name — it’s a warning.

“Johnny Red Coat” is our nickname for Houston Mayor John Whitmire — a lifelong Democrat who’s increasingly governing like a Republican. From siding with Governor Greg Abbott on right-wing crime policies to ignoring community voices in favor of backroom deals, Whitmire has made it clear: his loyalty lies with power, not people.

Why We Exist
This movement was born out of and hope. Our so-called Democratic leadership is undermining progressive values. We hope that together, we can hold them accountable. We’re organizing to demand transparency, equity, and real representation in Houston and Harris County politics.

What We Believe

• Elected Democrats should uphold Democratic values.
• Community safety doesn’t come from mass incarceration — it comes from investment.
• Public trust isn’t a given — it’s earned through action.
• Loyalty to party means standing with the people, not playing both sides.

What We’re Doing We’re building a grassroots movement to:

• Expose Mayor Whitmire’s record and policy decisions.
• Mobilize Houstonians around progressive alternatives.
• Challenge the local Democratic Party to draw a line — because if you’re enabling GOP-style governance, you’re not part of the solution.
